Heisler 9-Speed

Hello, I'm looking to buy a 46 Farmall M. It has an extra shift lever on the right hand side, above the brake pedal. The current owner says it's a Heisler Overdrive that overdrives gears 1-4 and reverse. It drives good and seems to be in good working order. My questions are, are these overdrives prone to any problems? If the overdrive goes out, can you still drive it in the original gears, what is it exactly, just an additional transmission gear? Thanks for any help.
