Jim I sold my 0-6" micrometers a few months back and the only thing I can measure with is the calipers. Your right calipers by no means is a way to check tolernces.
I guess it"s not going to much matter what it reads he"s not going to have it turn even if it"s .0035 out round. Like the other guys says he probably will be mad if it knocks or carrys very liitle oil pressure.
infact he did a vac case tractor last fall and one of his boys helped him do it. I asked what all he done to it and said he put in a step up kit in it and rod bearings only. plus had valves ground.
I asked why he didn"t put mains in a said they look good. He had it running the other day when I was there and I could hear this knocking when running at an idol. To me it sounds like wrist pin noise but not sure? I asked if he ordered pin bushings for the rod and said the new ones had them in it. He showed me his bill of sale and I couldn"t see any pin bushings in the kit. Then I got to thinking maybe he confused with the pin that goes thru the piston and rod that the snap rings holds it in. Sure enought he used the old wrist pin bushings that was still in the rods. I don"t know? I try to help him out on the best way I"d would do it but he is very stubern!!
Maybe it will work out on what way he wants to do it? But i"m thinking just as long as the S*** won"t hit the fan if something goes wrong. Thanks you guys for helping me out on this. Mike
