I would try first removing the air cleaner hose to the carb, this will tell you if the air filter is plugged, if this makes no difference, I would then try turning the main jet on the carb all the way in (gently clockwise) when it bottoms out, then back it out 3-1/2 turns, start the tractor if the condition improves & it stays running idle it up to around 1/2 throttle then slowly back the main jet out 1/4 turn at a time until the muffler just starts to show a little black smoke, at this point turn it back in a 1/4 of a turn, everything should be golden.

If turning it out makes no difference in how it's running then it a fuel supply problem, float setting, sediment bowl, or fuel supply restriction.

If the fuel side of things all check out ok, next time it stalls immediately lay your hand on the coil, if it is too hot to touch then the coil has went bad, if it is just warm it is probably OK.

I would then remove the distributor cap and check the condition of the points, if corroded looking remove & file the contact points to bright shiny, re-install & carefully re-set the point gap ( takes a little practice). Minor timing adjustment may be needed after re-setting the points but it should run reasonably well. Keep us posted on your progress.

If all this fails to make any difference there are more serious issues present, Valve clearances, timing gears, or possibly something so simple we all tend to overlook it, loose wire connection, crossed ignition wires etc.

Today's Featured Article - Product Review: Lead Substitutes - by Mike Schordine. Lead was oriinally added to gasoline as an upper cylinder lubricant. It lubes the valves and seats. If you rebuild the motor, you could use hardened seats and valves, and unleaded fuel. But if your old tractor runs good, a simple lead substitute added to the gas is a perfectly reasonable solution. And, if you are like me, your tractor is under cover, but it sits outside. So with every temperature change, the humidity in the air collects in the fuel tank, in the form of water. ...
