The serial number will tell you what year it is. That is on a little silver plate riveted to the side of the tractor. Get the number that's stamped (dented) into the plate and look it up under the "Serial Numbers" on the left side of this page, or post it.
95% chance it's the later style. The early style was only used on 1939, 1940, and maybe 1941 models AFAIK.
"Hard to come by..." not really. If a tractor salvage yard doesn't have at least one M on the lot, it's not a tractor salvage yard. They only made over 250,000 Ms.
