Where I used to work there was a 4 row 185 unit planter, the only one I have ever seen. The one in your picture looked similar, except that it is not directly mounted on the tool bar, also the hoppers are different. I imagine the mechanisms in slightly different models were about the same inside the hopper, at least for row crops. The openers could have been modified to look like that. I used it a few times for grain sorghum but basically it did not space the seed correctly, must have been worn out.
