At the risk of comparing apples from a different tree, I had the same problem when I restored our Minneapolis Moline UB. It would stay in 5th gear only under load. My dad used it for years on a feed grinder/mixer and our standard procedure was to start the loaded mixer in 3rd and do a "grinding shift" to 5th, then proceed to the hog barns. Upon investigation, rounded teeth were the problem. On a UB, 5th gear does not engage as fully as other gears by design, I suppose because of the lighter load. My only remedy was to replace the gears from a salvage tractor (or a bungee cord at first).
