I've always heard that the engine change from the C263 to the C291 and the D282 to the D310 happened at the same time. Serial number 37236 and below had a D282 if it was a diesel. The D310 required a longer frame and that is when then parts book shows the change. Since both gas engines are basically the same it would have been possible to make the gas engine change at a different serial number.
