Also if your 1256 still has 2 batteries (6 volt in series to make 12 volts), if one battery is boiling and the other is not, your problem is a cable connection between the batteries, or the battery cover might be shorting the wrong post to ground. Also the batteries could be connected wrong and be operating at only 6 volts (I don't think it would start!) You might even have 2 12 volts hooked up wrong (24volts!), since anything can happen in 40 some years with untold numbers of hands messing with it.
