None of the oil that passes through the filter goes to any part of the engine until it again passes through the oil pump. It al all returned directly to the reservoir.
The base of the H and M oil filters is attached to the block where there is a passage from the oil galley to the bottom of the hole where the canister attaching bolt is in. That bolt is hollow with a small hole in the side near the center of the filter. That allows oil to enter the inside of the filter to flow through to the outside filtering the oil. After the oil has been through the filter it goes back down through the filter base where the passage is aligned with the 1/8 inch pipe drain tube in the block returning the oil to the pan.
