Sounds like the Hydraulic system is running under pressure all the time and is running through the relief valve. Does the engine appear to be under load all the time??? If running on relief, all the energy going into the hydraulic system turns into heat. I'm not familiar with the 404, but some of these tractors had a shut off valve on the hydraulics. You closed that valve when you wanted to use a remote. If you don't have a remote and that valve is closed, the system will pump through the relief valve, causing a lot of heat.
