Well, yesterday I had a frozen choke on my '51 Plymouth. I fixed it, but needed to make a gasket for the carb, and as long as I was in, I wanted to change the air filter oil and the plugs. And one of the plug wires was bad. The first car parts store I went to (O'Reilly's) didn't have: gasket paper, 10 wt oil, a cut-to-length sparkplug wire kit, or plugs for a '51 Plymouth. So not all car parts stores are decent.
I would say that if you went to an O'Reily store, you didn't go to a ("decent") parts store at all, you went to a joke inside a building disguised as an auto parts store. It may be different elsewhere, but O'Reily, Auto Zone, Advance, and the like around here are not worth stepping into, unless you want something incredibly simple (wiper blades, vanity plates, turtle wax, etc.) or common parts (brakes, water pump, etc.) for something made in the last decade. The NAPA, Carquest, Auto Value, Pronto, Federated, and AC Delco stores around here are "decent" auto parts stores.
