I have never broke a shaft on the tractor but have heard of it happing. Around my area, exchange units run around $500.00 for dual shafts. Not sure about rebuild cost doing it yourself. 15 ft is not too much for a 986. I used a 15ft for years behind a 806 and 856 about the same size as your 986. Does you your PTO shaft on the bushog have any wobble in it that might have caused the tractor shaft to break? The PTO units are the same from a 706 thru a 1486.
