We have several Oliver 1xxx tractors equipped with both shuttle (Reverse-O-Tork) and partial powershift (2 or 3 speed Hydrapower.) They operate like this:
Shuttle: You select any of 6 gears from the main transmission, then step on the pedal for the direction you want to go (FWD or REV). The harder you push the pedal, the faster the tractor goes. To change direction you simply let up the pedal and step on the other one. No braking or clutching is required - in fact there is no clutch pedal.
The shuttle transmission is ideally suited for loader work, snow moving, etc. - any task with frequent changes in direction.
Partial power shift: This is a 2 or 3 speed hydraulically-shifted planetary transmission interposed between the clutch and the main transmission. It can be shifted up/down under full load without clutching.
PPS is useful for heavy field work like plowing. When you encounter a hard spot you can gear down simply by shifting the Hydrapower lever. When thru the hard spot you then smoothly gear back up again without stopping.
