Any engine you can afford. Seriously, with enough money you can put anything in an H. My buddy dropped a 289 ford motor in one. I've seen 350 chevy v8's installed.
The M,SM,400,450 engine family will not bolt in easily.
The IH SH,300,350 will bolt right in with no modifications. An engine out of a IH 460 will bolt in with some mods to the frame rails steering etc. Thats about the limit of what I've seen and researched.
It's easy to over power an H drivetrain. You start running out of traction. Then you add bigger tires and weights to get aforementioned traction.
