I had the same problem on the clutch of my 1956 400. I improved the tighness a little bit by taking the pedal off and placing a large washer between the pedal and the housing, and then replacing the pedal tightly against it. It isn't perfect but the lateral swing of the pedal has been reduced enough that it is not going to miss the housing pedal stop when released. I also greased the daylights out of it to slow down additional wear. This pedal did have a zerk.
