Have you checked the filters? Are you getting enough fuel to the pump? It don't sound like all pump problems. I owned a SMD years ago and the butterfly in the intake manifold did not operate correct and it would not pull itself, loss of power. Linkage to your compression release valves might have the valves open. Make sure everything is shut off on the gas side when you switch it over to the diesel side.
