I have had this happen to me before, if it was in first gear when it popped out the trick is to point the shifter the same way it would usually be when it is in first gear and try to get it back in that same shift rail. If that doesn't work then you may have to get a small pry bar in there and slide the rail back to neutral, this is not real easy because you can't see down in there while you are trying to pry it back and they don't always move real easy.
