Yup, Hugh pretty much nailed it. Summary: running lean is bad period. These older engines especially, will chew up valves and valve seats just about as quickly as you can replace them. Some of the relatively newer, higher compression number series, will gall pistons/cylinders as well. For years, I run what I own a wee bit rich.....not enough to heavily soot the plugs, but enough that I don't have valve issues.
Octane is required for one thing: compression
If you don't have a higher compression engine, you don't need the higher octant. Any letter series or older will run very very happily on 87 octane. If your engine isn't running well on it, you have other problems: faulty carb, incorrect timing, leaky valves, poor ignition. Look there and don't worry about the 87 octane.
