running an engine w/o the thermostat in is a big mistake.some people who have cooling problems,take it out and then because the guage reads low,figure everything is ok.the problem here is then the water moves thru the engine very quickly and does not have enough time to transfer the heat from the metal into the water,causing the metal to be hotter than it should be,therefore causing excessive wear,and the wear increases toward the rear of the engine.ie #6 cylinder will wear more than # 1
