Technically, there were three different PTO assemblies used on the H model. There was also another style used for a short period that looked very similar to the first style on the outside but the engagement inside was changed from the dog clutch type to the later spline style clutch.
The serial number break down is as follows:
Type 1 501 to 45613
Type 2 45614 to 117999
Type 3 118000 and up.
Tractors originally equipped with the second style could be upgraded to the later style by just changing the PTO assembly. Tractors originally equipped with the original style generally needed the later style transmission counter shaft to use the later style PTO assemblies.
There was an adapter that could be used to convert the dog clutch style counter shaft to the later style but I don't know how well they would work once the shaft was worn out. The ones I converted would not stay engaged because of too wear on the dog clutch. Since the counter shaft had to come out to be repaired it was easy to just upgrade to the later style shaft.
