Some of you may remember me posting questions while anxiously awaiting my first old tractor to arrive. After trying to get it shipped it since Sept, it was good to finally see it show up last Tues. It was a little hairy getting it off the flatbed, but that's another story. The best way to describe it is "a complete, original, un-messed with, low-hours tractor (1953)". I am the third owner. The second owner used it for 30 years to mow a couple acres once a year. I can tell usage is low by the very quiet engine and little steering play. For some reason the first owner repainted it 30-some years ago. That and one rear tire looks like all that's ever been done. I just replaced what looks like an original rear Firestone. I plan to keep using the weather checked original looking Hercules front tires. I may have paid a few hundred too much, but considering the condition, I think it's going to pay off. So far I've just been getting familiar with it, mowing a little (Woods L59 mower), and catching it up on maintenance. Put new Hy-Tran in this weekend. What came out black as coal and thick as molasses and strangly, about 4 qt too much. No sign of water though. Maybe prior owners satisfied their maintenace duty by just adding a little once in a while. From Tyler's pictures, I learned how to make good battery cables. My plan is to put it in good shape, use it for mowing and cultivating, and maybe after the kids are off to college, restore and repaint it. I thank you all on this forum for what I've learned so far and hopefully I'll be able to contribute. Here is the first of many questions. Can the steering shaft seal on the steering box be replaced without removing the box? Also, can end play in the pitman arm shaft be adjusted? Thanks, David in VA
