You don't want them too tight because they are splash lubed, not pressure lubed. I prefer to set them the old fashioned way, as described in the service manual. Plastic guage seems like a waste of time to me on these engines, as the journals are likely to be irregular if it was used a lot, but in reality they are very forgiving, as long as it can turn and isn't so loose it knocks, it will likely be just fine.
