Paul, IH called it a thermo-syphon but here's the best explanation I heard for it yet: Imagine having water in the radiator, and oil in the engine water jacket. The oil in the engine will want to float on top of the water in the radiator, so the oil will flow and fill the top half of the engine and raditor and the water will flow and fill the bottom half of the engine and radiator. Now imagine the same thing, but instead of oil and water, it's warm coolant and cold coolant. Warm fluid floats on top of the cold, so the warm fluid goes up and out of the engine into the radiator, and the cool stuff in the radiator sinks and fills the bottom half of the engine. But the fluid in the engine gets warmed up by the engine, so it starts to rise, and the warm fluid in the radiator is cooled by the fan, so it sinks. Around and around it goes. The hotter the engine fluid gets, the faster it rises, and it flows through the raditor that much more. Hope that helps. Anybody with a better explanation please write. Dave
