Red Dave - Your comments are right on. A true magneto is self-powered - the only external wiring is the shutdown grounding wire. Disconnecting the wire while the engine is running will have no effect. Dave - Sounds as if a clever person figured out a way to utilize the original Wico magneto coil as a battery ignition coil. I guess it's theoretically possible, though I've never actually seen it done. And your description describes perfectly how it should work. When you remove the mag cover, is the coil still there inside? Can you see how it's wired? So long as it works, I'd be inclined to leave it as is. Only thing I'd check is the current draw in the low voltage feed wire. If it's more than 2 or 3 amps, consider adding a ballast resistor in the feed wire. This will lessen current draw and reduce the sparking at the breaker points.
