I know it is not for an M, but in the parts book for my Super A, I found the following information: Shims for Differential Ball Bearing Retainer 0.004" fine 0.007" light 0.015" medium 0.030" heavy I found all of these thicknesses being used between the two retainers of my Super A.
I also looked into the CaseIH on line parts book for the Farmall M differential and rear end. There only three shim thicknesses are shown: light, medium, and heavy; no indication of the thicknesses in inches being given. I'd presume the thicknesses to be the same as listed for the Super A. The larger size of the rear end and its components supposedly did not necessitate the use of "fine" shims. Jives with the information provided by D Slater.
