Yes there is, if it's the WRONG type of filter.
Most automotive fuel filters out there are for systems with fuel pumps, and will not gravity flow enough fuel to the carburetor. They work fine at first but they're barely keeping up. Get a little crud in them, and they can't flow enough fuel anymore. Then you come on the forum because your tractor won't start.
The kind of crud that does that would normally flow straight through the carburetor and out the exhaust on these old engines. Real fine stuff isn't a problem, the big flakes of rust are what get you.
If you start with a clean tank, and use clean fuel, there is absolutely no need for anything beyond the sediment bowl.
If putting a fuel filter on makes you sleep better at night, by all means. Just make sure you get the RIGHT one.
