The 2096 is a great tractor for light work (cutting and baling hay, spraying) but is worthless for doing heavy work (tillage) and is acceptable for medium work (planting). It is only rated at 120 hp. where as the 986 is 106 hp. and the 1086 is 130 hp. In theory the 2096 should out pull the 986 but it won't the 986 is around 11,000 lbs. with out added weight the 2096 weighs just a little bit over that with add weight. And the 1086 will run away and hide from both the 986 and 2096. So in my mind the 986 or 1086 would be the way to go if you find a guy that is good with IH tractors to fix the shifter issues. If you get either of the IH's I would recommend dropping this man a line and have him explain things to you.
