Mike, According to Clevite, the reason for not oiling the bearing backs is the friction fit or crush from tightening the cap is what keeps the inserts from spinning in the rod, not the tangs as commonly believed. This crush fit also alows heat transfer from the bearing to the rod where oil spash cools it. If oil is present under the inserts, it is possible that when tightening the cap the oil won't squeeze out quick enough to prevent over crushing the inserts and thus leaving them loose after torqueing.
