Thank you greatly for all the replies. I read most of the comments and then went to work. I pulled out the whole shaft and looked in. I saw that the shaft has a sleeve and that the shaft has splines on the far end. So, I put the tractor in gear and aimed straight feeling the shaft hit the back end and then rotated gently until I felt the splines hit the hole - went in smoothly and without trouble. Thank you for all the help folks.
