If I remember correctly there was a service bulletin back in the late 60's early 70's that talked about the holes in the head and block. Two extra holes were needed in the area of cylinder 5 & 6 and the head gasket was to be used as a template to mark the location. I'm thinking that the holes were to be drilled with a 5/16 drill. I have seen times that the holes were in the head but not in the block. I have also seen engines that had no holes in the block or the head, but the holes are in the gasket. I hope this helps.
