Like your choice of the word "button". This might well be the culprit since they tend to wear beyond belief.
To nh8260: Can you still feel the detent positions for the "engaged" and "disengaged" positions of the PTO shifter lever?
a) If you cannot, either Gene is probably right in saying that the "button" jumped out of the groove on the sliding shaft AND/OR the detent pin jumped out of its guide and fell into the rear end case.
b) If you still can feel the detent positions, then Gene is probably right on the "button" being broken.
Before removing the PTO assembly from the rear end case, drain the transmission oil ;-)
