Hold the gear on the end of the distributor shaft with one hand and looking at the cap end. If you can turn the cam shaft clockwise and it springs back its for the gas. Like TV said no advance on some diesels. Also the original application can be identified if you can find the code. look on the OD where the two mounting clamps go for letters and numbers stamped in.
