Issue one: The new coil is just a 14 volt capable set of windings rated for 12volt operation, it has no internal resistor. There is no reason to use an additional resistor, it will cause poor spark for sure. Issue two resetting the points to .020 could have helped if the shaft was worn, or the timing retarded some. If it didn"t help, the issue may be fuel supply to the carb. Open the load screw on the front of the lower edge one turn at a time to see if it gets better. If not put it back where it was. If a fuel line filter has been put on it, take it off and use a hose where it was located. Make sure there is full 1/8" stream of fuel at the carb (there is a strainer at the fitting!)
