The only thing you mention that doesn't sound normal is that it started without being plugged in at 0* degrees!!!! I have a 656 with the same engine. it will start on it's own down to around 10* but it's a hard go. I just plug it in if I know i'm gonna need it below 30*. Even then it will spit, pop and everything else for a few seconds, just the nature of the beast.
