The lights are not wired through the Key at all, they will turn on and off (if the switch and wiring is OK) no matter where the key switch is turned. If they do not turn off with the switch, the switch wiring is most likely to be shorted at or near the switch, as that is where the wires are likely to be near other wires that are connected to the amp meter. The Click in the dash is also not normal. The dash may need to be removed carefully to check the integrity of the wires. Remove the non grounded battery cable before removing fasteners to avoid shorting components to the opening. If it was converted from Generator to Alternator, and is no longer close to factory, we will need much more info to help get it operational, like photos of the wiring and data about the alternator.
