Hey Red Dave - Timing gear damage was caused by an improperly installed keeper on the cam gear retaining nut. This let the nut unscrew from the camshaft. The nut then apparently got caught for an instant between the cam and idler gears - took out several teeth on gear before it dropped to the bottom of the gearcase. Curiously the tractor continued to run fine - the only symptom was an ominous knock at idle caused by the cam gear sliding along the shaft and hitting the inside of the gear cover every 1/2 revolution. The knock however disappeared at speeds above idle, or whenever load was applied to the hydraulic pump. I probably put 150 - 200 hours on the tractor in this condition before making the repair. When I pulled of the gear cover, the keeper, nut, pieces of gear teeth and bits of the camshaft key all fell out onto the ground. The cam gear hub was worn into an odd tapered shape, and a large chip was torn out of the camshaft keyway. Amazing to me the tractor continued to run as long and as well as it did with the cam gear just sorta flopping around on it's hub. When installing the new cam gear, I put a new keeper on the nut, bent it over in 3 spots, and also treated the camshaft threads with Loctite blue threadlocker. Don't want that stupid nut to come unscrewed on me again!
