A number of years ago I was doing some simple research on motor oil, reading some well-sourced documents on additives. At that time, Mobil 1 and Amsoil were the only synthetics on the market and there were no "synthetic blends". At that time, the consensus seemed to be that a quart of quality motor oil was about 55% oil and 45% additives. A lot of the additives were straight nonorganic chemicals but some were synthetic compounds. Of course, the synthetic/nonsynthetic question deals mostly with the 55% part of it.
