If after doing the checks already listed, & the trouble persists, check the coil primary wire where it goes up over the valve cover [in the harness]. Our SMTA had the wire down to 2 strands conducting where it went through a clip on the front valve cover bolt/ stud. It would act just as you are describing yours is. We figured the 2 strands would conduct until they got hot & then the resistance would rise & choke off voltage to the coil. You can check for this by running a wire with clips from the battery to the coil temporarily. Sounds like maybe a bad condenser, though.
