Dave8N,

If you want IH then I agree with the #8 Little Genius suggestion. They are "everywhere" and some are in good enough shape that with a little TLC they can be made whole again. Some of the newer models (#16?) have better trash clearance.

What year of tractor do you intend to pull a plow with? Do you want the tractor and plow to be matching in a period of age?

Check with farmers you know, or keep watching for farm auctions, watch for ads in rural newspapers, go to tractor shows in the summer months and ask around and on this site on the left side (classified and photo ads). I also think there are several in your area sitting in the weeds (or hopefully in a machine shed)...but you have to spread the word and keep searching.

I suggest getting a "rope trip" model just for simplicity sake....for a rookie that is the easiest way to get started. An earlier model (#4) was popular also in it"s day. Buying parts can be problematic, buying a 2nd plow for parts is a common solution.

I occasionally buy old IH plows at farm auctions, fix them up, plow with them to get the moldboards shined up, and then sell them; I do this just for a hobby. I have a nice #8 2-14" rope trip now ready to go, but you have to come to sunny and warm Wisconsin to get it! I don"t really want to sell it....I plan to pull it at our plow day in April just to see how it goes and what I need to adjust.

I wish you well in your search. Plowing with an old tractor and an old plow is the closest to heaven I"ve been able to get so far!

Today's Featured Article - The Great Escape - by Dave Hollrah. It all began Monday with a little baling of second crop on the lake shore field, and as I drove out past my sister and her hubby's place, this small calling sound could be heard from the general direction of their manure pile. Out of the yard, over the cows and bale piles, through the dozer piles, poplars, and brush, out onto the ditch grade road, past the noisy 6.2 diesel engine pulling my well traveled Suburban along. Well it sure didn't take me long to figure out what it was because I alrea ... [Read Article]
