I have a Farmall MD which has the same starting system. Always starts right up. Everything has to be right with your carb and ignition. When you push that lever to change over to gas, it does quite a few things you need to check. 1) The third valve is opened in each cylinder to the chamber in the head that contains the spark plug. The valves have a clearance to set. Could be they are not opening enough. 2) The carburator float is released so gas can flow to the carb. In diesel operation, be float is locked up, shutting off the gas flow. 3) Butterfly valves in the manifold are set so air can flow through the carb. In diesel operation air does not go through the carb. 4)A switch is opened so the magneto is active. The Mag is grounded during diesel operation so there is no spark. All this is controlled by the linkages that are behind the carb and also the throttle linkage set up on the opposite side of the engine. A cross shaft goes through the engine to the linkages behind the carburator. I agree with Jon, you may have carburator problems. If you have spark and it looks like all the switch over stuff is working, first thing to do is take off the carb and check it out.

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
