I think the reason the bucket extensions were not full depth is that the narrow buckets were all mounted from the side rather than the back. These were originally trip buckets and they were ballanced better if mounted with the pivot point part way up the side (the buckets had to fit within the loader arms instead of in front of them like the newer ones).
