Stanley builds mufflers according to OEM specs. If the original specs called for a baffle, then that is how Stanley built it. If the specs called for the muffler to NOT have a baffle, then that is how they build it. The confusion occurs when folks do not look for the correct muffler for their particular tractor. For instance, the correct Stanley muffler for a Farmall H DOES have a baffle, and the muffler for a Farmall M DOES NOT have a baffle, but the M muffler will fit the H and vice-versa.
My 1940 H has a Stanley muffler purchased from a Case-IH dealer. It HAS a baffle, and it IS quieter. It also has a slightly longer barrell than an M muffler, but the over-all length is the same.
I still have a new Stanley IH-4 in my parts stash, and just installed the last IH-10 that I had last fall. I bought both probably 10 years ago. The IH-4 is listed for use on the H-SH-300-350 and W-4 tractors, the IH-10 is for H-350's, M-450's, (S)W-4's and (S)W-6(-TA)'s and more. NEITHER of these Stanley mufflers that I posess have any baffles in the center pipe. Each have the center pipe punched in the same fashion. The bodies do have different lengths and outside diameters.
Perhaps they changed their design at some point or they are building something specific for CNH, or maybe something wasn't installed on my muffler at the factory.
