When I was 12 years old my dad put me on an H -- at noon and quitting time my ears would be numb. They cleared up in a few minutes and I forgot about it. I am 76, my dad was also partially deaf. If it is hereditary it is either resistance to noise or no resistance to noise. I blame it on the noise, one way or the other. I retired at age 63, I could hear "pretty well", it went downhill from there.
