Yes you need the SHIM PLATE , it was a strip of steel bar stock that slid in the hitch receiver before you backed into the implement . each shim plate had a roll pin thru it's side to hold it from going in the receiver to far . as for the measurements of that part off hand i don't have it . They were listed in the parts books way back , i had a set of them at one time . I bought a fast hitch baled off and I H dealer way back when i had my 450 and the salesman told me that the blade came off a small fast hitch and i needed the shim plates and i got them at that time . Back them i did not know any better and i placed them in the hitch and went to hook up to the blade . My buddy and i were doing this and the balde only went in a little ways and we just figured that because it was rusty that is why it would not go all the way . Well being DUMB and STUPID we took the tractor over to a big tree and proceeded to BEAT the blade into the hitch . After several hard tries we now figured that something was wrong . Maybe we did not NEED those shims . Well we did a fine job of beating the blade in as with everything we tried to get it back out failed . Well never leave myself and a buddy as crazy as i am alone together as what we came up with fell under the heading of HEY YA'LL HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH this . So we go fetch the LONG chain and i mean LONG like thirty feet long . He gets his 450 and we chain the blade to his tractor and we start pulling against each other , Still the blade will not come out . Ok so lets back up to each other and take off and hit the end of the chain . After several tries in first , second and third and fourth gears only thing left to do was ROAD gear . Yep the blade did come out and it went flying out and up , up as far as the chain let it go . A 450 Farmall will only go so fast and somehow Mikey was able to stay just ahead of the blade till gravity took over and i came back down to earth . We never thought that and 8 foot Freeman blade could fly , So make sure you NEED the shims FIRST .
