Thanks one and all for your thoughts. Looked things over again and finally figured out a way to see the level on the stick. Looks as though there's more in there than I thought, and maybe that's the major problem with the stuff coming out the vent. Guess I'll try to drain just the excess out, which is a pain and will be a mess, but will maybe stop it from blowing out the vent. We'll see.

High level doesn't explain the cold weather problem, so I guess either a plugged screen or an air leak remain as possibilities. Guess I'll see how it behaves with the proper amount of oil before deciding where to go further, if anywhere.
