Dave: If you haven't changed the transmission oil for a good long time, what you most likely have towards the bottom of your transmission is an emulsion, which is partly water and partly oil. Emulsions tend to separate slowly, so if you let it sit for a while when it's reasonably warm out, some water will collect at the bottom, which it sound as if you're draining, but you're probably leaving a lot more water behind in the remaining emulsion. It can look anywhere from milky to like light-colored oil. I would expect you'll probably continue to have problems until it either warms up or you change your transmission oil.
