You say it's like a locked box in your hands, but is it not still on the tractor? All suggestions must be taken with a grain of salt with no guarantee suggested or implied. I cannot recall exactly, but it seems there is a retaining ring in hiding on the shaft there. I think you have to pull the shaft out or depress the part the shaft passes thru (one or the other) against a rather stiff spring pressure to expose the retainer. I vaguely recall this as a challenging task to expose the clip and remove it against the spring pressure. You may want to enlist someone to help. Assembly may be your next trick. I've not done that as yet. Looking ahead, I doubt you've removed your hydraulic housing. We can only hope you don't end up going there before it's all over. In all fairness, I don't think you should end up to your arm pits in hydraulic oil just to replace a shaft seal but I'd take a good look at a manual to insure myself there's no chance that's where this leads. I can look at a manual and get back next Tuesday. Have a good Holiday.
