I am presently working on a similar transmission from an early 47/ late late 46 Farmall BN. Facetiously speaking that hole is there so that you can accidentally knock you wrench down into while you are working on the tranny. In point of fact the same transmission was used on the A and B series tractors THAT whole is there so one may see into the differential section while the top / shifter cover is off and see if any work is needed on the differential section. These and a well built piece of machinery. If you are thinking about disassembly and replacing bearings and seals do it step by step and keep notes ( Even mental) but best on paper OR acquire a repair manuel By as many parts from your local bearing supply over IHC >> Check costs with both. Both will have comparable bearings and seals; probably made in the same plant. Best of the day to you, write me if you desire to. Wm.
