Yes, if you had to jam on the shift lever to get it in and out of gears before this happened, the TA is out of adjustment.
Pull the TA lever back and see if it shifts better. That is the telltale sign that it is out of adjustment. It should shift like butter then.
Pulling the TA lever back will make realigning the shift rails much easier too.
There's a short linkage on the left side of the torque tube that runs between the clutch arm and the TA arm. It is designed so that when you push the clutch pedal all the way in, it pulls the TA lever to shift it into low. Adjust using the techniques in the book, but not the measurements. Due to 50+ years of wear you have to adjust by feel. The link will likely end up slightly shorter than the book says it should be.
