Most tractors now in use top out at about 22 miles an hour. Manufacturers are turning out new tractors that are crowding the 30 mph barrier. JCB, a British company, makes a tractor that will go up to 40-45mph, but it is not well suited to heavy work such as tillage, it is more of a high speed, light draft sort of tractor.

Before tractors will be able to go any faster, several issues need to be addressed. The steering and braking systems need to be redesigned to include some sort of mechanical control instead of straight hydraulic power in case power is lost at high speeds. Some sort of suspension system will have to be put into place to handle rough roads. Tires will have to be redesigned with better ride and balance characteristics. One cannot also forget the implement the tractor will be pulling. It too must also be able to handle higher speeds. You also run into problems with laws and such. As the tractors turn into more of a truck, will the driver need to have a license and complete driving school?
